Nikolai was just three months old when the first signs of his bleeding disorder appeared. “I got to know that I had hemophilia when I was three months old. I had my first bleed due to inflammation in one of my wrists.” At the time, however, doctors were unsure of what they were dealing with. “Doctors were uncertain of what I had… so they frantically tried all sorts of different medications to [diagnose me].” It wasn’t until Nickolai’s grandmother mentioned that his father had “Christmas disease” that a proper diagnosis was possible. It was at that point that his life changed—thanks to his diagnosis, and support provided by the World Federation of Hemophilia (WFH).
