HEMNET Forum showcases progress in bleeding disorders management in Eastern Mediterranean

Professor Selim Nekkal, MD, head of hematology at Beni Messous Hospital in Algiers, Algeria, hosted the 6th Hemophilia Eastern Mediterranean Network (HEMNET) Forum in Algiers from October 31 to November 2, 2024, in collaboration with the Algerian Hematology Society. HEMNET is a network of regional medical experts that operates under the umbrella of the WFH. With a mix of impactful presentations and panels, the forum dove deep into regional approaches and successes in the management of hemophilia, von Willebrand disease, and platelet disorders, sparking new ideas for cross-border collaboration and research.

Held with the support of HE Abdelhak Saihi, Algeria’s Minister of Health, this year’s HEMNET Forum welcomed some of our community’s key leaders. Emna Gouider, MD, WFH medical Board Member; Barbara Konkle, MD, WFH medical Board Member; Magdy El-Ekiaby, MD, HEMNET Chair; key hemophilia treatment centre (HTC) leaders from 19 countries; and members of national member organizations (NMOs) in Algeria and several other Arabic-speaking countries. Assad Haffar, MD, WFH Medical & Humanitarian Aid Director; Rana Saifi, WFH Middle East Regional Manager; and Latifa Lamhene, Algeria’s NMO President, were also on hand to share lessons learnt from WFH support in Algeria.

The WFH and HEMNET have collaborated successfully for many years. In 2025, HEMNET will be a collaborator with the WFH on the WFH 2025 Comprehensive Care Summit: New Developments in Bleeding Disorders and MSK, will take place from April 23 to 25, 2025, in Dubai, U.A.E.
