IHTC Fellowship Program

IHTC Fellowship Program

The International Hemophilia Training Centre (IHTC) Fellowship Program provides training in all aspects of bleeding disorders management for healthcare professionals in developing countries. Since the IHTC Fellowship Program was launched in 1972, nearly 800 healthcare professionals from more than 100 countries have received training.

The program aims to improve the knowledge and engagement of healthcare professionals, and, in turn, deliver better care, enhance diagnosis accuracy, and improve patient outcomes. Training includes clinical, laboratory, and paramedical components.

Each year the WFH awards fellowships to medical and paramedical staff. Fellows are assigned to one of the designated WFH IHTCs where they undergo training. When assigning fellows to an IHTC, the WFH takes into consideration the fellow’s technical specialties and training needs, languages, capabilities, preferred training centre, and travel distance.

The IHTC Fellowship Program provides funding for roundtrip economy airfare and housing. The WFH will also reimburse the visa application fee (if required) and travel medical insurance for fellows. In addition, the WFH provides funds for meals and local transportation during training. The training is given by volunteer health care professionals at the host IHTCs. No remuneration is given to the host IHTC or to the healthcare professionals who provide training, and salary compensation is not included for fellows.

For more information on IHTC fellowships, contact the WFH at [email protected].

ELIGIBILITY AND SELECTION CRITERIA

ELIGIBILITY

International Hemophilia Training Centre (IHTC) fellowships are offered to healthcare professionals from developing countries working in close collaboration with hemophilia and other inherited bleeding disorders services. All members of the comprehensive hemophilia care team are eligible for fellowships, including physicians, nurses, physiotherapists, laboratory scientists and technicians, orthopedic surgeons, dentists, psychologists, and social workers.

SELECTION CRITERIA

Candidates are chosen based on their level of commitment and potential to improve care and treatment for hemophilia and other inherited bleeding disorders in their country after the completion of their training period.

To be considered for this program, applicants should:

  • Have strong medical references
  • Have a recommendation from the officially recognized national member organization (NMO) of their country
  • Be committed to improving hemophilia treatment after completion of the training period
  • Have a working knowledge of one of the following languages: English, Spanish, French, Russian, or Arabic
  • Not have previously undertaken an IHTC fellowship

Candidates will be asked to implement the expertise acquired through their training in their own country and replicate the knowledge gained. Therefore, it is important that candidates seek training in those aspects of care for people with hemophilia and other inherited bleeding disorders that are practiced at their centre.

APPLICATION PROCESS

Those interested in applying should discuss the application form with their centre and their NMO. Since there are limited fellowships available, a maximum of three applicants per country will be accepted. When there are more than three applicants from one country, the WFH Regional Manager will request feedback from the NMO and establish the applications priority bearing in mind the merits of the application and the country’s needs.

Applications for IHTC fellowships are to be completed and submitted online and should include:

  • A current curriculum vitae (CV) or resume (maximum two pages)
  • Two recommendation letters (one from the applicant’s NMO and one from their employer)

The application process for 2025 is closed.

Announcement of Granted Fellowships

The IHTC Committee will make the final selection of fellows in March of the following year. All applicants will be notified of the decision regarding their application by April.

IHTC ONLINE DIRECTORY

International Hemophilia Training Centres are institutions committed to providing specialized training in the care of people with hemophilia and other inherited bleeding disorders in accordance with the priorities of the WFH. IHTCs are designated for five-year renewable terms.

The IHTC directory is primarily intended as a resource to help potential fellows select the centre that best suits their interests and needs. The directory lists all 32 IHTCs currently designated by the WFH. It includes a profile of each IHTC, detailing particular characteristics and areas of expertise, such as facilities available, faculty involved in training, and languages spoken at the centre.
