The workshop was part of the WFH Path to Access to Care and Treatment (PACT) Program in Vietnam, a 5-year initiative designed to improve outreach and diagnosis and increase access to sustainable care for people with inherited bleeding disorders. The event was attended by ten physiotherapists and rehabilitation physicians from ten different hemophilia treatment centres (HTCs) in the country.
Day one of the workshop featured presentations on hemophilia clinical practice guidelines in physiotherapy management and holistic physiotherapy management for hemophilia, and an introduction to outcome measures in physiotherapy. The participants also visited the Hemophilia Comprehensive Care Clinic and the Physiotherapy Unit at Ampang Hospital, Malaysia.
On day two, the participants engaged in two practical sessions. They conducted patient assessments applying the HJHS , and participated in a practical hydrotherapy session for PWBDs in the hospital’s hydrotherapy pool.
Pham Thi Duyen, MD, from Vietnam National Children’s Hospital, described the workshop as an excellent opportunity to gain knowledge and updates on hemophilia management from experienced physiotherapists in Malaysia. She found the HJHS theory and practical sessions particularly valuable for assessing patients’ joint health, and intends to apply the knowledge in her own practice.
Nguyen Thi Mai, MD, Vice President of the Vietnam Hemophilia Association, echoed these sentiments: “I think that musculoskeletal outcome measures in hemophilia treatment are very necessary. They serve as a guideline for planning exercises to improve patients’ musculoskeletal health, minimize muscle and joint complications, and enhance their quality of life.”
