Since its start 50 years ago, the IHTC Program has trained more than 800 healthcare professionals from over 100 countries around the globe. Fellowships are open to all hemophilia treatment centre (HTC) multidisciplinary team members, including clinicians, nurses, physical therapists, laboratory professionals, orthopedic surgeons, dentists, psychosocial professionals, and other specialists dedicated to serving the bleeding disorders community.
Fellowships run for approximately four weeks and take place in one of the 34 designated training centres worldwide. The directors and staff at these centres provide training and enhance IHTC fellows’ capacity in diagnosis, treatment, and care. When fellows return home from their training, they’re able to share the skills they have acquired during their fellowship with colleagues and patients. In this way, knowledge “grows organically” and benefits more and more people over time.
The program recently celebrated its 50 years with a reception at the WFH World Congress in May. Johnny Mahlangu, MD, IHTC Director for the centre in Johannesburg, South Africa, and member of the WFH IHTC Committee, chaired the event. WFH President Cesar Garrido shared some words about the impact the program has had over the years. The event brought together IHTC directors and team members, committee members, alumni, and others to celebrate this exciting milestone.
