The WFH 2025 Comprehensive Care Summit’s rich program and other activities will keep you busy, but if you have a chance to explore, find out how to make the most of your experience in a city rooted in traditions and customs that visitors should be mindful of.
Greeting locals respectfully
When meeting a local, particularly of the opposite sex, wait for them to initiate a handshake. In many cases, a respectful hand to the heart is preferred over physical contact. Handshakes should be briefly done with the right hand.
Dress for the occasion
As with any city, attire should be appropriate for the setting. Modest dress is recommended in traditional areas, mosques, and government offices. One rule to follow: when in doubt, ask!
Learn a few Arabic phrases
Though English is widely spoken, using a few basic Arabic phrases will be appreciated by locals. Common greetings include “As-salam alaykum” (peace be upon you) and “Shukran” (thank you).
Be mindful when taking photos
Taking pictures of people without their consent is illegal and considered highly disrespectful. This includes photographing locals, their homes, and their cars.
Behaviour in public
Profanity and rude hand gestures are strictly prohibited in the UAE. Alcohol consumption is permitted in licensed venues but is not allowed in public spaces.
