The Susan Skinner Memorial Fund (SSMF) scholarship provides recipients with a unique opportunity to develop leadership skills, build meaningful connections, and advocate for the improved care of women with bleeding disorders in their communities and worldwide.

The mission of the SSMF scholarship program is to foster leadership and encourage the active participation of women of all ages in the global bleeding disorders community through education, training, and networking at major international WFH events.

WHAT DOES THE SCHOLARSHIP COVER?

The SSMF scholarships are awarded every two years to both U.S. and international applicants, sponsoring their participation in the WFH World Congress and other related events.

  • Round-trip economy class airfare.
  • Ground transportation on arrival from the airport to the hotel and on departure from the hotel to the airport.
  • Daily transportation to/from the hotel and convention centre (if applicable).
  • Hotel stay in a shared room.
  • Meals (daily breakfast, lunch and dinner).
  • WFH World Congress
  • Access to a treatment room (medical personnel and treatment will be available on-site).
  • Transportation between the scholarship recipient’s home and local airport.
  • Medical and travel insurance (it is mandatory for scholarship recipients to obtain both of these).
  • Vaccination fees.
  • Hotel room incidentals (i.e. luggage handling, internet access, telephone calls, laundry, bottled water, room service, mini bar or pay-per-view movies).
  • Costs associated with early arrivals or late departures unless otherwise approved by WFH.
  • Headphones for access to online interpretation services.

CRITERIA

To qualify for the scholarship, applicants must:

  1. Be a person with a bleeding disorder (or a symptomatic or asymptomatic carrier) who consistently lives and identifies as a woman.
  2. Be between 18 and 60 years old.
  3. Be an active volunteer or employee of a WFH NMO or a chapter of a WFH NMO with meaningful involvement in the community beyond their NMO role.
  4. Commit to continue supporting the work of their NMO or chapter.
  5. Commit to local, national or international collaboration with other patient advocates to support the development of women in leadership positions within the bleeding disorders community.
  6. Demonstrate a minimum intermediate level of English fluency (interviews will be conducted).
  7. Not be a past recipient of the SSMF scholarship or WFH youth fellowship.
  8. Be willing to accept the terms of the scholarship if selected (terms and conditions to follow).
  9. Be able to participate virtually (access to reliable internet).
  10. Be able to undertake international travel (valid passport, ability to apply for a visa).

The next application cycle will open from July 15 to September 15, 2025.

APPLICATION PROCESS

Applications for the SSMF scholarship are to be completed and submitted online and include:

  • An overview of the applicant’s work, education, and volunteer experience.
  • Three application questions pertaining to the applicant’s experience, learning priorities and future impact.
  • Two recommendation letters (one from the applicant’s NMO and one from a mentor).

  1. All information submitted to the WFH must be truthful, accurate, and verifiable. If any provided details are found to be false, misleading, or altered, the WFH reserves the right to revoke the scholarship.
  2. Potential scholarship recipients must agree to participate in a virtual interview in English with members of the selection committee as part of the selection process.
  3. The WFH reserves the right to cancel or modify the scholarship in response to extreme circumstances (natural disaster, pandemic, political instability, safety concerns, etc.) In such cases, an alternative experience may be offered either in person or virtually.”
  4. Expenses and processes related to passports, vaccinations and insurances for travelling nationally and internationally are the responsibility of the scholarship recipient.
  5. In the event of a virtual experience, scholarship recipients are responsible for securing their own connectivity devices and services. The WFH may provide assistance on a case-by-case basis if needed.
  6. Scholarship recipients must participate in all scheduled sessions, events and activities.
  7. Scholarship recipients must document their experience (in person or virtual) and provide a post scholarship report, including photos and videos.
  8. Scholarship recipients must complete an online survey after the scholarship experience.
  9. Scholarship recipients are expected to mentor at least once, providing future scholarship recipients with guidance and support in preparation for their experience. Additionally, they must be willing to help promote and support the program when possible.

The fund commemorates the late Susan Skinner, an American woman determined to ensure the availability of safe and effective treatment for her two sons. The WFH USA is deeply grateful to the late Thomas Skinner, who created the fund, their son Mark Skinner, family members and friends, as well as organizations in the bleeding disorder community who continue to support the fund.
